| Bathed in stage lights and surrounded by high-tech cameras, with directors, make-up artists watching, 16-year-old Florian Winkler’s calf muscles tightened as he lifted off, soaring through the air and jamming the ball into the basket with a deafening clank that echoed to the corners of the gym. | Click to view video of Singapore 2010 YOG commercial

On Friday, the 26th of February, Winkler played the main character as five other boys selected from the Stingers Basketball Club suited up to star in a commercial, soon to be broadcasted worldwide, for the Youth Olympic Games to be taken place this summer in Singapore. It began with a typical club training on Sunday afternoon, the 31st of January, when the crew from Salt Films came to UWC to scout the athletic talents of the U16 Stingers boys. Of the 11 boys picked out in the first round of casting for the YOG commercial, the casting directors, after a photo shoot and test video, narrowed the “actors” down to six: along with Florian Winkler of GESS, Mingsam Boulter of CIS, Xavier Fourcade of UWC, Jules Perrot of UWC, Matthew Stewart of Serangoon Secondary School and Papa Shoum of UWC were chosen for the honor. Almost a month later on Wednesday, the 24th of February, the six boys found themselves standing on a basketball court covered with stunt mats, jump ramps, and cameras for a pre-shoot and dunk practice at UWC. They leapt from the ramp, twisting their bodies in mid-air, extending their arms, before slamming the basketball in through the hoop. On the day of the actual shoot, Friday 26th February, the Stingers boys arrived at Anglican High School at 7:15 in the morning. For six hours, they engaged in a staged 3-on-3 match. Mingsan danced around with the basketball, squeaking his shoes against the hardwood, flashing ball-handling tricks as he bought the ball down the floor. He dished the rock to Xavier on the elbow, who in turn delivered a precise bullet pass to Florian as he gathered speed, taking off as he races towards the basket. With the ball clasped tightly in his fingers, the breeze brushes past his face, Florian took flight, slamming the ball into the basket with elegance and power. The cameras were everywhere--on the shoulders of the defenders, under the basket, on the floor--capturingfrom every angle the scenesthat people from around the globe would within the next couple of months be able to see on their television screes! |
